4-way Interface

This “multi-slider” from Fujitsu reminded me about one of my older ideas on orientation-dependent UI. The idea is that each side of the phone has one main feature “assigned” to it – phone, messaging, music and camera. Depending how you hold the phone different content is displayed. Hold it one way and you see list of contacts. Turn it upside down and you see the playlists etc.

There’s more. This “4-way” UI can be considered mobile version of drag-and-drop. No more soft-buttons with changing labels. No more context menus. Just like on desktop you drag-and-drop a document file on Word icon to view it, on printer icon to print it and so on, you just “send” the selected content to the necessary side of the phone screen. For example, if you have a contact selected and click on the “phone” side, you initiate a call. Click on a “messaging” side and you can type a new message to that person. Click on a “photo” side let you change the avatar for that contact. Click on a “music” side let you change the contact’s personal ringtone. Somewhat similar controls (not UI) has iRiver U10.

Too bad there’s no information about interface of Fijutsu concept. I can only assume it’s “slider-dependent” i.e. UI changes depending in which way you slide the keypad.
