Discovering different blogs on mobility lately I often stumble upon Google-inspired idea of a phone interface as a simple search-box. So users will type lets say “calc” and get the link to “start calculator”.
Searching for phone functions? Nonsense. If you prefer to search for phone’s functions instead of navigating through simple menus it means only one thing – the interface is a mess.
They all missed the idea. It’s not Google search that should inspire, but the way Google reacts to searches. Type “2+3” and first thing you see is “2+3=5” and not list of documents containing the terms 2+3. Type “20 dollars to pounds” and you receive “20 U.S. dollars = 11.4031587 British pounds”. This adaptive behavior should inspire. So instead of typing “calculator” to get calculator you should type 2+3 and get the result. Feel the difference?
This is what my idea is about.
