The first question in some Voight-Kampff-like test for mobile UI designers should be “what is your current phone?”. The answer you are looking for is Sony Ericsson. I’m joking of course, but there’s a great respect among the UI designers/developers community for Sony Ericsson products.
Ericsson was one of the first to drop the one-main-menu-item-per-screen structure in favor of tabbed menu. Then T68 and it’s matrix menu (icon grid) set the new standard.
I consider Sony Ericsson to be some kind of a mobile UI trendsetter. That’s why I think (or hope) the “next big thing” in UI design will come from SE. Too bad they prefer evolution in small steps than revolution, though it’s perfectly understandable.

Makes sense!
I find the step by step approach, interesting.
With SE, I see a good understanding of both the hardware, as well as the software interface, from a feature-hungry user point of view.
Nokia is amazing... for the vanilla"I just wanna talk!" kinda user.
