Address Book Blinking Light Saga Phone Personification No Interface

Interface as a killer feature
Can the interface itself be a killer feature? Something that will be demonstrated first when showing the phone to friends? Something that can sell a phone? I think yes.

Recently one of the readers sent links (check out this and this) to videos of two AU/KDDI phones (thanks, Lee!). Their interfaces are a perfect example of eye candy animation just for the sake of it. The animation doesn’t serve any functional purpose here, but it looks cool and let's face it - often “cool factor” is more important than feature list as selling factor. Think of RAZR...

But eye candy also can serve a functional purpose. Mac OS X showed that the well done animation enhances the user experience, smoothly leading the user from one state to another. As phones are getting more and more processing power, it’s time to see more functional and “cool”-looking animated interfaces working along industrial design to create a consistent experience. Again Japanese phones can serve as example of that – remember PENCK?
