Interesting discussion followed this post. The choice of “less phone” by 37 signals is somewhat questionable, but the idea is right – in reality most of the smartphone users don’t really need the “smart” part. Nokia doesn’t advertise Series 60 phones as smartphones and they know what they are doing.
Discussion showed again that a lot of people who chose Sony Ericsson phones did it deliberately and mainly because of the UI (K750 is my current choice too). Also it showed that the design (industrial and interaction) is becoming more important than features. But I think only one company now can make “less phone” an instant hit and a future mobile trend. Not because it will do it perfectly right, but because whatever phone it releases will be the next hype. And because it doesn’t have the burden of previous interfaces “to maintain smooth transition” so it can design UI from the scratch. Figured out already? |
