Cooper in its case studies often replaces hierarchies with an easy scrollable single layer of information organized into groups. Sometimes I think I would do the same with the phone interface. No multi-level hierarchy, only one long easy scrollable list of contacts, features, events etc.

The interface will somewhat resemble IM client window, but think of it more like a “sidebar” on which you can create and display different filters (smart folders, saved searches). The main filter should be contacts list sorted by latest calls. Besides “out of the box” filters like Applications, Events, Media, Settings and others, you should be able to create your own filters like Recent Photos, Recent Playlists etc.
In this case dedicated buttons act like filters: you press the “music” button and the screen displays only music-related items - player and playlists. You slide the lens cover and you see only photo-related stuff.
The important thing here is to use a proper control. Joysticks and d-pads would be disruptive. I’d suggest something that provides easy and fast scrolling within each filter with the ability to “jump” between filters. |
